History of Composting at Upper Valley Recycling

Upper Valley Recycling & Compost has a rich history in providing Napa Valley agricultural and neighboring farm communities with balanced organic compost for their farming practices since 1992.  Upper Valley Recycling & Compost understands that feeding soil with balanced organic nutrients is important in farming to provide you with the yields of fruit expected each year. It has always been our mission that our compost operation has helped our great agricultural industry.

Our compost is a cost-effective farming practice and its use has many benefits. The high organic nutrient content High including nitrogen & calcium, breathes life into depleted soils.

Our Products

The basis for our compost blends is Napa Valley grape pomace derived from post-harvest and winemaking production grape seeds, skins and stems. Research-tested, these organic soil amendments applied at given ratios can increase crop yields and bring vitality back to depleted soils.

Harvest Compost Sales

Harvest Compost is made from post-harvest grape seeds, skins, and stems then blended with 1/3 green waste. This material is composted using an aerated static pile system.

We only sell this material in quantities of 5-yards or more, and will not load any pickup trucks or vehicles that don’t meet this threshold. Deliveries must be 20 yards or more.

Listed with: OMRI, Organic Materials Research Institute and the California Department of Food and Agriculture as an organic output material.

Price per yard: $17.50 (5-yard minimum)

CERTIFICATIONS & LISTINGS

Our Harvest Compost is Organic Input Material with the California State Department of Food and Agriculture. It is also registered with the Organic Material Research Institute.

Our compost is approximately 2 yards to 1 ton.
Unfortunately, we aren’t able to sell our compost in quantities less than 5 yards. However, Harold Smith & Son sells our compost in smaller quantities, so we suggest you buy it from them. They are located at 1505 Charter Oak Ave, St. Helena, CA 94574.

Upper Valley Waste Management Agency (UVWMA) is purchasing compost on behalf of up valley jurisdictions as part of UVWMA’s compliance with State Law SB 1383.  This compost will be free of charge to government agencies, non-profits, green businesses, residents, and commercial businesses on a first come first served basis. Help close the loop and use compost produced up valley in your vineyard or garden! To find out if you qualify, please fill out the Free Compost Inquiry form.

Compost can be purchased from Upper Valley Recycling year-round. Upper Valley Disposal & Recycling also sponsors a compost give-away event in the fall. Check our calendar for the dates of all events.
